The Styx Valley is in the centre of southern Tasmania located in the secluded wilderness region, south west of Maydena. In 2003, conservationists and politicians campaigned to save the forest from clearing for woodchips. The Upper Florentine Valley also the site of old growth forests became the focus of protests when logging operations commenced in 2006. The Upper Florentine Valley lies 80km west of Hobart (100km by road) in the Western part of the state and borders on the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
