The only first-hand account of the tragic shipwreck of the Charles Eaton on a voyage from Hobart to Canton. The shipwreck occurred on the Torres Straits Islands. Most of the ship's complement were massacred, some eaten by the indigenous people. Ireland, the two D'Oyley brothers were taken to Murray Island by other indigenous people. Five seamen escaped to Timorlaut in a boat.

- The first issue with preface dated 1844 and the front cover lettered Teller's tales, without any ill. Not in Ferguson.
- This issue has the following differences to the second issue. The Preface has the word Doyley on the third line. There isn't any pagination above the caption title.
- Library's SR1 paperback copy has green cover with cream hatched background. Leaves of plates are coloured cream, yellow and peach. Text pages are cream white.
- Library's SR2 paperback copy missing front cover. A col.photocopy has been substituted for what is assumed to be the correct cover. The back cover is a washed blue with cream hatched background. Leaves of plates are a uniform yellow. Text pages are cream white. Page 63 has some missing text at bottom right hand corner of page.
