- "This small publication is part of a series of published lectures by government officials, business leaders and others. The first lecture of no. 637, by Foreign Ministry official Negishi Kuniyoshi, looks at the situation of Australia in 1942, as Japan intensified its attack on the north of the country. The booklet begins with a geographical description, highlighting the fact that although Australia is 20 times the size of the main islands of Japan, its population is only about the same size as the population of Tokyo. This is followed by an outline of Australian history, noting the voyages of exploration by Abel Tasman and Captain Cook, the creation of convict settlements, the gold rushes and the introduction of the White Australia policy. Part three outlines the main products of Australia and emphasises the potential for further discoveries of mineral resources. This is followed by a brief description of the Australian political system and an assessment of Australia's military strength, which stresses the relatively small size of Australian armed forces and the country's lack of arms manufacturing capability. The lecture ends with a section entitled "The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere and Australia" which presents Australia as a very promising destination for Japanese migration. It notes that the climate is more suitable for Japanese settlers than Southeast Asia, and estimates that Australia, with a population of only 7 million, could sustain a population of 30 million: "in the future, if the Japanese population grows, it will surely be necessary to think of Australia". The second lectureof no. 637, by the president of the Arima Trading Company, begins with an overview of the geography and economy of the East Indies (Indonesia), and of Japanese plans for the economy of this occupied area. It ends with a quite alarmist account of the presence of overseas Chinese in the Indies and Southeast Asia more generally, noting their widespread presence and high birth-rate, and emphasising the need for careful study and surveillance of the activities of the Chinese in the region.
