"Sprite (about 12 years), is being bullied by some of the girls in her class at school. At home she has a special needs brother (Mozz, aged about 4), an artist father and a sensitive, volatile mother (Sunny), who in fact suffers from a mental illness (not named, but resembles bipolar disorder). Dad becomes frustrated at Sunny's tendency to self-medicate inappropriately (she smokes dope, but this isn't named) and abruptly leaves the family. Immediately, Sunny falls into a deep depression: Sprite returns from school to find Mozz in danger of drowning; Sunny can't get out of bed and he's been left to his own devices. Sprite's quest begins. She knows where Dad is and sets out with Mozz to find him. The journey sees the pair walking unfamiliar streets at night. They encounter danger (potential paedophile), and find a saviour in a streetwise boy who long since ran away from home. In the course of this extremely challenging time, Sprite comes to some realisations about herself and those bullies. Eventually she finds her father, and her mother receives the help she needs. Luther ( the saviour) and Sprite have struck up an understanding, but he moves on, pursuing his own quest."--Provided by publisher.
