"The first Wedgwood medallion, with the name 'Capt. Cook' impressed on the field below the bust. This is one of the copies marked 'Wedgwood and Bentley' on the verso, and thus part of the earliest issue ... The medallion is usually attributed to John Flaxman, although there is no evidence to support this contention ... The design is based on the engraving executed by James Basire after the painting by William Hodges, the official artist on the second voyage. Although not listed until the fifth edition (1779) of Wedgwood's catalogue of 'Heads of Illustrious Moderns - Philosophers, Physicians, &c', the medallion was almost certainly first issued early in 1777"--Information supplied by Hordern House.
