Peter McCracken, was born in Dalwallinu, W.A. and went to work in the Kimberleys as a stockman. He discusses stations and their owners; droving cattle to Lake Nash; meeting with Charlie Brown, stock inspector at Alice Springs; training and working as a stock inspector in the NT; working as stockman on Elsey Station and Hodgson Downs (1958); Aboriginal workers and stockmen; working on a mountain cattle station between Glen Innes and Grafton in N.S.W.; helping to start up the live cattle trade between Darwin and the Philippines (1954); pack horses; cattle mustering camps; bronco branding techniques; building cattle yards; the role of and stories about cooks in the stock camps; protocols concerning managers and head stockmen, lines of command; hygiene in the camp; being the first stock inspector in the Katherine area; his role: liaison, disease eradication, inoculation of stock, etc.; the relative value of horses and helicopters for mustering and stock moving; stock inspector's relations with the drovers; retirement; station management; the social aspects of the Drovers' Camp Reunion; stock inspectors' role as part of the local community; involvement in race meetings and rodeos; the training of stock inspectors in Colonel Rose's school; veterinary schooling; dipping of cattle and horses; health risks and ground contamination from arsenic and DDT; drovers' evasion of dipping sites; differences in management style between different categories of owners; the influence of the seasons on stock management; the use of horses in stock work: numbers used in a working day, specialised skills for cutting horses and camp horses; use of mules for camp drafting and night watching; concluding remarks.
