John Meredith began recording bush music in 1953, continuing until 1994. He was a foundation member of the Bushwhackers. He was involved with the formation of the Bush Music Club and the Australian Folklore Society. He was the author of Folk Songs of Australia, volumes 1 and 2.

- The recordings were made in Sydney, surrounding suburbs and regions. Also in Mudgee, Gulgong, the Blue Mountains, Teralba, Ulan, Wallerawang, Womberal, Lithgow, Holbrook and other areas in New South Wales. Recordings were also made in Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria. Some recordings were a result of exchanges made with other collectors.
