The prints show the imaginary figures from a Japanese folk tale. It originated in China from BC 1st to AD 4 th century, in a book, titled, 'Sengaikyō'. Many types of 'foreign' figures were described there. Those figures were eventually introduced to Japan through books. Then they became very popular in Japan through the doll performance by Kisaburo Matsumoto in Asakusa, Edo.
