Max Davidson speaks about his parents; his father’s experiences growing apples and other produce; working with his father after leaving school; forming a family company; transporting and marketing fruit; cultivating, harvesting and packaging fruit; social life in Orange in his teens; his marriage (1975); purchase of a larger property; new cultivation methods; his involvement in industry politics; the Fruit Committee of the United Farmers and Woolgrowers Association; joining the Executive of National Association and election as President (in the 1980s); the Constitution of the Australian Apple and Pear Growers Association; changes to export conditions; the development of new fruit varieties; Sod Culture and the use of herbicides; Controlled Atmosphere storage.
Davidson talks about the contraction of the fruit industry and loss of smaller growers; competition and lower profits; price pressure and impact of supermarkets; introduction of bulk handling; changes in packaging, harvesting and marketing; dealing with agents; purchasing Hillside property and selling fruit directly to the public; challenges of hail storms; approach of different growers to marketing; Taste Orange; challenges faced over 51 years; impact of climate change; impact of technology; changes to grower community; taking advantage of tourism; irrigation; changes in pest management and tree nutrition; changing role of the Department of Agriculture; his appreciation for Mother Nature; his involvement in Men’s Shed; his satisfaction at having lived a useful life on the land.
