- Biography/History:
-
The grad is a unit of plane angle, equivalent to 1/400 of a full circle. It is also known as gon, grade, or gradian. The unit originated in France as the grade, along with the metric system. Due to confusion with existing grad(e) units of northern Europe, the name gon was later adopted. There are 400 grads in a circle, so 100 in a right angle, compared to 360 and 90 for degrees. The French used grads instead of degrees until the Second World War.
- Notes:
-
- Topographic map series for Indochina. Note that latitudes and longitudes are given in both degrees (blue) and grads (black), with all longitudes measured from Paris, not Greenwich. Relief shown by contours, shading, hypsometric tints, and spot heights.
