- Description:
-
- [between 1720 and 1972]
- Scores and parts.
- Summary:
-
The collection comprises approximately 220 volumes, which occupy 6 linear metres of shelf space. It contains published editions of musical scores, together with a very small number of performance parts and a small number of handwritten (“copied”) scores. There are several instances in which published scores have been rebound into single “owner-bound” volumes. The publications date from around 1720 to the early 1970s. Many of the volumes are rare and potentially valuable, and many of them are inscribed by their composers. The collection was obtained by the National Library as part of the Symphony Australia Collection in 2009. It is apparent that only a certain number of the titles in this collection belonged to, or were collected by, Goossens himself. These are identified by the existing Symphony Australia labels with the prefix "EG". Many of the titles post-date Goossens' life and so it would seem that Goossens' own collection has been combined with other scores held by Symphony Australia before coming to the Library.
- Biography/History:
-
Symphony Australia is the management body for the orchestras previously managed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Eugene Goossens was an English conductor and composer who established his reputation and career in Britain and America before coming to Australia in 1947 to conduct the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and direct the N.S.W. Conservatorium of Music. He lived and worked in Australia for nine years. Eugene Goossens' contribution to music in Australia (and, more so, internationally) is significant. He was an early proponent of a new performance space to be built in Sydney, which eventually became the Sydney Opera House. He was knighted for his services to Australian music in 1955.
