The terms of reference for the inquiry directed the Committee to consider the impacts of gene patents on healthcare, medical research and the health and wellbeing of Australians. The length of the inquiry was indicative of the complexity of many of the legal and scientific issues underpinning the inquiry's terms of reference, and the equally complex way in which these interact with the development and delivery of healthcare services and the conduct of medical research in Australia.
