The collection consists almost entirely of correspondence written to Hawke in his capacities both as Federal President of the Australian Labor Party and as President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU).
- Biography/History:

Trade unionist and Prime Minister. Hawke was elected President of the ACTU in 1969, a position he occupied until 1980. He was also Federal President of the Australian Labor Party from 1973 to 1978. Hawke was Member of the House of Representatives for Wills, Melbourne, from 1980 to 1992. After only two years in Parliament, and just one month as Leader of the Opposition, Hawke was elected Prime Minister in 1983. He remained in office until 1991. Hawke was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1979. The Hawke memoirs were published in 1994. Hawke has been involved in the development of the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, the Hawke Research Institute and the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library, bodies established by the University of Adelaide in 1997. In 2008 Hawke was made Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu, the highest Papua New Guinean honour available to non-Papua New Guinean citizens.
