Hugh Belling, born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales (1923), discusses his family's background in Junee; WWI and his father serving at Gallipoli and Lone Pine; his father being injured in battle and returning to Australia (1917); the soldier settlement on Mates Estate near Tarcutta; the block of land his father was allocated there; debts and hardships at the settlement; his parents' marriage (1920) and children; his father building a house on the block; crops sown; sheep and shearing; fertiliser; tools, machinery and transportation; water supply; ringbarking; Chinese workers; the Depression; other families and community support on the settlement; childhood farm work and play; his schooling from ages 8 to 14; his mother's flower garden; clothes and sowing.
Belling discusses reading; shopping, sports and social events; religious observances; his mother's ill-health; medical facilities and treatment; being cared for by relatives when his mother was ill; seeing the sea for the first time at age 12; rifles and shooting; rabbits; bush fires and the destruction of the original house; insurance and rebuilding; descriptions of the interior of the new house and its utilities; problems with debts and inspectors from the Department of Land; his service in Bougainville in WWII; his father's involvement in the Returned Services League; the ANZAC spirit; being a WWII soldier settler; his settlement block on Goolhi Estate near Gunnedah; his children; comparisons between soldier settlement after WWI and after WWII; his father's death; benefits of growing up and working on the land; his retirement (1999); war and film.
