The 1958 English language education council seminar for English teachers in Japanese junior high schools was designed to provide, in a very limited time, both intensive training in audio-lingual classroom methods, and a minimum degree of linguistic competence necessary to fulfill the teacher's role as model, judge, and director of practice. The trainees were young teachers with at least two years of experience who were regarded as "promising," yet whose oral command of English was insufficient. This booklet describes the content and use of the project's "seminar script," a set of lesson plans based on experimental audio-lingual materials covering the essential sentences and constructions for a first-year English course. The fifteen "chapters" of the script were each divided in half, allowing three hours each for "contents" and "methods," in the following sequence--(1) presentation of the sentences and intensive practice by guided imitation, (2) discussion in Japanese conducted by linguists, highlighting structural and phonologic differences between the two languages, (3) individual practice and correction, (4) a demonstration lesson with trainees acting out the role of pupils, (5) exposition of a classroom procedure followed by practice exercises applying it, and (6) practice teaching. In conclusion, a discussion of the preparation of a "script," and possible applications of the "script pattern" is offered. This document appeared as a special issue of "the modern language journal," volume 44, number 2, part 2, February 1960. (rw)
