This manual is intended to be of use to teachers, and to students in grades seven through twelve, as enrichment or background material for mathematics courses. It attempts to establish an understanding of the process of logical step-by-step analysis of problems for computers, of the ways in which computer capabilities can suggest different approaches to problems than those usually taken, and of computer applications other than those considered strictly mathematical. Subjects treated are flow diagrams, single and nested loop processes, analog and digital computers, machine language programing, compiler language programing, use of repetitive processes, approximations, and nonnumeric repetitive processes. Examples are given for each subject, such as the following--for repetitive processes, examples include multiplication by repeated addition and finding the prime factors of an integer--for non-numeric repetitive processes, examples include an elimination process, sorting processes, and composition of music by computer. Each section is followed by exercises with answers given. Appendices include a section on number notation systems with exercises, a glossary, an index, and a bibliography. This document is available for $1.50 from the national council of teachers of mathematics, 1201 sixteenth street, N.w., Washington, D.C. 20036. (bb)
