- Summary:
-
The approach taken in this program is based on the assumption that children are placed in heterogeneous classes with children of varied abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Although migrant children may be given special attention through small group activities specifically designed to meet their needs, these children should be given the opportunity to see that all children are different from others in many respects and that, because migrant youth may be different, they are not inferior. The theoretical foundation purports that effective communication among children is of paramount importance. As children become involved with one another in relevant activities, they will be motivated to learn. The teacher acts as a facilitator/director/resource person in the learning process. The self-concepts of children will improve as they become (1) aware of their similarities and differences compared to others, (2) confident of their abilities, and (3) knowledgeable of acceptable social interaction. Their self-images will be improved if they are successful in school. In the teachers' guide, a program for effective learning is examined; activities for promoting emotional growth in migrant children (Magic Circle) and for future orientation are described; and activity units, based on Arkansas curriculum guide activities, are presented by grade level (K-6).
