This book presents statistics on the total population of doctorate degrees granted in all fields by US universities since 1920. Most of the data refer to the period 1920-1961. The book is designed to answer 4 major questions: how many doctorates are there; what are their origins; what are their personal characteristics; and where do they go for postdoctoral employment. Each general question is broken down into subsidiary questions regarding the 150 fields considered, state and regions of doctorate production, individual institutions and their doctoral output in the physical sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, arts and professions, and education, undergraduate institutions, trends in origins and fields, etc. The time lapse between baccalaureate and doctorate award is also analyzed with regard to different fields, marriage, number of dependents and other factors. Factors such as birthplace, state of high school graduation, location of first postdoctoral job are also analyzed. (JS)
