- Summary:
-
This paper presents a concise description of procedures used by one teacher to move from a teacher-directed to a child-centered classroom and how this Self-Selection method has made it possible for many American schools to affect a successful transition from the traditional to the open classroom. At the present time, hundreds of teachers throughout Vermont and the United States are involved in varying degrees of Self-Selection. From these people many new approaches, ideas and problems have been generated. A number of the more popular ideas are presented. In addition, several problems which have appeared with this approach are discussed. Among these problems is that of helping the public understand the new role of the teacher and the student.
