The third volume in the NCTE Distinguished Lectures Series, this collection of papers includes (1) William Stafford on poetry and the language of everyday life, (2) Fred Stocking linking Shakespeare to his time and all time by analysing "temperance" in Sonnet 18, (3) Alan Downer discussing the nature of comedy in drama and the universal search for a harmonious relationship between men and women, (4) Nancy Larrick showing some of the effects of a changing world, with its emphasis on violence, on readers and potential readers, (5) Walker Gibson discussing composition and style as a reflection of and a creator of character, and (6) Harold Allen advocating language as the tie that binds together the elements of the English curriculum.
