This report presents detailed statistics on the characteristics of households and families in the United States. The report includes information on the number and size of families and households by type, age of members, presence and age of children, metropolitan-nonmetropolitan residence, occupation of family heads, marital status of household and family heads, and married couples by age of husbands and wives. The text highlights information on differentials in educational attainment of family heads by age, race, and family type; characteristics of households headed by persons 65 years old and over; recent increases in primary individuals; and households by type and size for the United States and regions. The data presented in this report were derived from the March 1973 Current Population Survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census and are subject to sampling variability, which may be relatively large for the smaller figures and for small differences between figures. Among the findings are the following: In 1973, about 37 percent of all white family heads in the United States had completed less than four years of high school and about 28 percent had completed one or more years of college. By contrast, about 59 percent of all Negro family heads had completed fewer than four years of high school and about 13 percent had completed one or more years of college. (Author/JM)
