This program, included in "Effective Reading Programs...," serves 459 students in grades 1-3 at 15 elementary schools. The program employs a diagnostic-prescriptive approach to instruction in a nongraded setting through the use of the Lippincott Basic Reading program. When a child enters the program, he is introduced to a decoding process that teaches him to sound out all letter sounds. During this decoding process the child is able to connect the sounds, or partial words, into a complete word. All phonetic activities, including word songs, ear-training exercises to distinguish sounds, and pictures to discriminate and recognize words, are introduced in grades 1 and 2. The child learns to reinforce the skill by reading from workbooks, dittoed materials, filmstrips, and code books that offer additional practice in the development of reading skills. Much of the phonetic introduction and reinforcement is done in group settings. If a child is having difficulty in the group, the teacher or aide takes the child out of the group to teach the child in an individual setting. All during the program, various types of reading materials and activities, including other texts, library materials, kits, listening posts, and card games are used. (WR/AIR)
