Relationships between student characteristics (academic as well as personal) and student changes were investigated. Student changes were measured by growth scores with the following four criterion measures: Test on Understanding Science; Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal; A Scale to Measure Attitude Towards Any School Subject; and Student Perception of Teacher Style. The sample used in this study consisted of 471 undergraduates enrolled during the 1971-1972 academic year in the course called "Thought and Structure in Physical Science" at the University of Illinois. Twenty-six independent predictors were selected. High school and college backgrounds in science and mathematics as well as subscores on selected parts of ACT were included among the academic predictors. Dogmatism, flexibility, tolerance, responsibility, and intellectual efficiency were among the predictors identified as personal factors. The collected data were treated using analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, and multiple regression techniques. Among the findings were that consideration of the personal and instructor variables significantly increased the ability to predict student changes and that it was apparent that there were abilities which were significant in predicting student changes other than those measured by standard achievement and intelligence tests.
