This document summarizes the experiences and results of four years (1972-1975) of work in nonformal education in Ecuador. The project grew out of informal discussions in 1970 between several members of the Center for International Education at the University of Massachusetts and a group of Ecuadoreans and Americans in the USAID mission in Quito. These discussions led to the realization that both groups were dissatisfied with the focus on the formal educational system as the major vehicle for human development. The project is a series of subprojects linked together by a common staff and a corresponding similarity of basic philosophy concerning goals, staffing, and processes. Throughout the project are two general programmatic thrusts: creating and testing an approach to working with village facilitators, and adapting materials and methods to be used by the adult education staff of the Ministry of Education. Two objectives of the project were to create or redefine methodologies and processes within which might be produced a learning-growth relationship and to demonstrate that these processes are valid as instruments for social change. Emphasis was on generating processes that foster the phenomenon of transformation rather than pure modernization. The document proceeds generally from a discussion of the conceptual framework and the philosophy toward a discussion of the more specific techniques and materials used, such as gaming and radio.
