- Summary:
-
Minority enrollment has increased faster than total enrollment in state and land-grant universities in recent years. Minority students comprised 15.2 percent of the total enrollment in fall 1976, compared with 11 percent in fall 1972. Black students accounted for almost half of the minority enrollment, or 6.7 percent of the total enrollment. Other minority categories used were: nonresident aliens, Asian or Pacific islander, and American Indian or Alaskan native. The category experiencing the largest growth in recent years is the Asian/Pacific islander group. With the exception of nonresident aliens, minority students continue to be better represented at the undergraduate than graduate and professional levels. Overall, men outnumbered women in minority representation, especially in the nonresident alien category. However, black women outnumbered black men at all levels except first professional. Minority students are slightly less likely than other students to attend college on a part-time basis. Predominantly white campuses have made major advances in black enrollment, and traditionally black campuses have increased their populations of non-blacks. Rankings and statistical data for individual institutions are included. (MSE)
