The major purpose of this study was to provide a current, descriptive data base regarding teacher education in Illinois. A two-part survey was conducted to collect data. The first part required administrators of teacher preparation programs to identify the number and types of distinct teacher preparation curricula at their respective institutions. The second part required that personnel responsible for each curriculum identified complete a survey questionnaire designed to obtain descriptive data about their respective curricula. Data regarding the selection and retention of prospective teachers were collected as well as information regarding selected characteristics of the teacher education curricula. While some patterns were identified by this study, a single profile of what exists was not identified. It was determined that teacher education in Illinois was characterized by diversity in most respects. There was much variability in the characteristics and practices employed in each component studied. The most consistent patterns identified for teacher preparation curricula in Illinois were in the percentages of time devoted to various types of learning experiences, and in the location of the experiences. Tables displaying results of detailed responses to questionnaires are included in this report. (JD)
