The purpose of this study was to review and study the aspects of seventh- and eighth-grade programs located in elementary school buildings in contrast to seventh- and eighth-grade programs in junior high school buildings. Several separate studies were designed and conducted to gather data. One study consisted of a survey of 10 percent of all seventh graders in the school system. A second approach consisted of comparative case studies of four different seventh- and eighth-grade programs, two operating in junior high schools and two operating in elementary schools. The final aspect of the investigation involved compiling and organizing statistical data describing both kinds of programs. Findings indicate that seventh graders attending both elementary schools and junior high schools share a positive attitude toward the academic learning experience in their school and toward the family as a source of help with questions or problems about sex or family life, and a negative view concerning the poor general behavior of most students and the poor reputation of their school in the community. Among the differences is the availability of more diverse facilities, curricula, and extracurricular activities in the junior high schools. (Author/IRT)
