The paper reviews research on and techniques for early linguistic intervention with retarded children. Outlined are principles upon which linguistic intervention should be based, a definition of early intervention, the rationale for early language and communication intervention, and principles for developmental prelinguistic and early linguistic intervention. Techniques are described for enhancing vocal communication, proto-conversation, and reference; facilitating object concept development and promoting representational mental activity and symbolic play before teaching receptive and expressive vocabulary; and facilitating combinatorial speech.
