- Summary:
-
A series of eight papers on training of modern language teachers are addressed to the following topics: (1) the organizational and administrative framework of inservice training, with special reference to the probationary year; (2) the needs of the schools for teachers with particular abilities; (3) how institutions seek to equip students for teaching and subsequently help them during their first year; (4) the role of the LEA advisor; (5) how best to use existing resources to reinforce in-service training to satisfy future needs; and (6) the functions of a good head of department and how he can be trained for the task. A summary of conclusions is presented that includes specific proposals and suggestions concerning the "divisions" of in-service training: the probationary year, the early career years, and preparation for promotion and responsibility. Several other specific proposals are also offered for the continuing training of the modern language teacher. Two appendices present a discussion of intensive courses for modern language teachers and a list of conference participants. (EJS)
