Speeches from the 1978 annual meeting of the American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities are presented. Contents of the report are as follows: "Earning Respect" by Drew S. Days, III.; "The College in Controversy: Government Relations 1978"; "Until the Year 2000: Reflections of a Retired College President" by John E. King; "How a Businessman Looks at Higher Education" by Richard L. Abbott; and "The Health Hazards of the Presidency and What To Do About Them" by James M. Crawford. In the first address, Drew Days, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, discusses a recent controversy regarding Brigham Young University and explains enforcement of civil rights laws by the Civil Rights Division. A panel discussion with member presidents involved in government controversies involved: Alfred Acton, president of the Academy of the New Church; Charles S. MacKenzie, president of Grove City College; Lewis Nobles, president of Mississippi College; George C. Roche, III, president of Hillsdale College; and Dallin H. Oaks, president of Brigham Young University. Retired college president John E. King discusses cultural change, perceptions of trustees, and questions college presidents need to consider. Businessman Richard L. Abbott offers criticism of academic freedom at colleges and addresses the issue of financial support to higher education. Some suggestions for improving the health of college presidents is offered by James M. Crawford. (SW)
