- Summary:

The construction of general linguistic theories is subject to errors of fact and perspective. The theoretical linguist is inclined by the nature of his work to fall into such errors because he/she is obliged to generalize about many languages on the basis of research done in one or a few. The scope of this task inevitably leads to a failure to consider all facts in their context and renders the completion of all necessary background research impossible. C. Douglas Johnson's article "Global Constrained Rule Application in Menomini" is analyzed to support this position. By limiting themselves to restricted linguistic theories involving a specific family of languages, theoretical linguists will avoid inevitable error and remain true to the nature of their field, since experience has shown that only within language familes do interesting implicational universals seem to hold. A brief bibliography is appended. (JB)
