In response to the problem facing college faculties of choosing textbooks that are both "readable" by students and adequate in content coverage, a text selection process has been developed that can be used with or without the aid of a reading specialist. The first step in the process, a preliminary check, examines each proposed text's publication date, scope of coverage, point of view, and cost. The degree to which textbook topics reflect the course objectives is also considered. After each proposed text has had a preliminary examination, a summary statement of text strengths and weaknesses for currency, content, point of view, and cost should be made on a text comparison sheet. The next step is the calculation of text readability, followed by an analysis to determine if the text contains necessary reading aids. A cloze test is then performed for each text that has not been rejected according to the previous review procedures. The last and most difficult stage of the selection process is a review of content coverage, readability level, text features, and cloze test results to select the text that best meets the needs of the instructor and the department. (Appendixes provide a text comparison sheet, a reading aids checklist, and example of how the SMOG readability formula is used, and a sample cloze procedure.) (RL)
