- Summary:
-
In a study of student adjustment to university life, excerpts are presented of interviews with 18 mature age unmatriculated women who returned to formal education at the University of New South Wales in 1975. The women were aged between 25 and over 40, half had children, and they were generally middle class. They were not selected by a random process. The responses of the women are divided into four broad sections: initial responses to the university experience, adjustments in home life, reasons for attending the university, and expectations versus the reality. It is concluded that: (1) more effort is needed to consider ways of opening up the opportunity for university education to less privileged groups; (2) the structure and the modes of assessment of some courses may not be suited to present student needs; and (3) those who are given access to higher education have a social responsibility to the community at large.
