National results for the College Board's Admissions Testing Program for 1979 high school seniors are compiled in this annual report. Scores for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the Test of Standard Written English (TSWE), and Achievement Tests are reported and analyzed, and data from the Student Descriptive Questionnaire (SDQ) is discussed. Average SAT Verbal and Mathematics scores of 1979 seniors are the lowest since 1972. The average TSWE score has declined each year since its introduction in 1975 and was lower for women than for men. Average scores for Achievement Tests showed a decline for the third consecutive year. Results of the SDQ support the following statements: (1) the percentage of minority students rose to an all-time high of 17.1 percent; (2) the median of estimated parental contribution toward college expenses was $1,190; (3) Business and Commerce overtook Health and Medicine to become the most popular areas of intended study; and (4) interest in education showed a continued decline, sustaining a trend begun in 1973. Results indicate that students with the highest SAT scores tend to select the following areas of study in college: physical sciences, mathematics, English/literature, engineering, and biological sciences. Other SDQ areas discussed include: academic accomplishments in high school, plans for advanced degrees, housing preferences, extracurricular activities, and accomplishment and ambition. Data are tabulated for plans, test scores, high school record, socioeconomic characteristics, college plans, and type of high school attended. (Author/SF)
