A study was conducted to compare composite student ratings of teacher performance at four California community colleges with composite student ratings at a public four-year institution. Students of five community college and six university accounting professors comprised the sample for the study. During the last class meeting of the fall term of 1978, a questionnaire asked students to rate their instructors in terms of their preparation for class, organization of presentations, knowledge of subject, overall teaching skills, level of self-confidence, sense of humor, fairness in dealing with students, and ability to relate to students. They were also requested to assess the value of assignments, currency of course material, how well exams covered the material, how well the grading system was explained, and how well the texts supplemented the lectures. Additionally, students were asked whether they would recommend the course and the instructor and how well the instructor compared with previous instructors. Responses were obtained from 614 university students and 162 community college students; 45 students also provided comments. The study revealed no significant difference between the mean ratings of community college and university instructors on any of the 15 profile items. The student report contains a review of the literature and a bibliography. (AYC)
