College 1, sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Small Colleges (CASC) in 1978 and 1979, is described as a short-term, national experimental college that brings faculty and students from small U.S. liberal arts colleges together in a temporary educational system. During this four-week summer program, new teaching methods, new course designs and content, different modes of student-faculty interaction and evaluation, and alternative assumptions about educational philosophy, values and practice were explored. The sessions were held on the campus of Bowdoin College in Maine, and included nine faculty from CASC colleges and 24 students, who recieved six credits. This report describes in detail the conception, planning, execution, and evaluation of the College 1 project. A week-by-week account is given of the 1978 program. An overview of program outcomes is given in the following areas: personal (student, faculty, and administrators); interpersonal; organization/community; thematic (work, leisure, and service); specific content; general intellectual: teaching/learning; curricular; and institutional. Evaluation forms for both 1978 and 1979 programs are appended. (MSE)
