- Summary:
-
A new classification is needed which would not prejudge the boundaries of art, one that would bring together in one place the literature on every sort of material artefact, tool, and artwork, without distinction. Within this grand class of artefacts, the sub-arrangement would, as far as possible, respect the integrity of individual cultures. Only at the level of the culture or society would artefacts need to be evaluated on an art-tool axis, and it could be left to the individual art library or cooperative acquisitions network to decide how far along that axis it wished to proceed--at what point, that is, a category of artefact ceased to qualify as art.
