Folkloric recording. Introduction by Kevin Bradley, Curator of Oral History and Folklore at the NLA, explaining the nature of the National Folk Fellowship. Kevin speaks of Dougie Young, the principal focus of Dr Toby Martin's research and of other Indigenous musicians from the same area and time. He thanks the selection panel for the Folk Fellowship. Kevin introduces Dr Toby Martin (his recently-awarded PhD in Country Music in Australia, 1936-2010) and his colleague and associate artist, Jimmy James, grandson of Dougie Young. Toby speaks of his research into Dougie Young and his music; his song Cut a Rug; his parentage and journey to Wilcannia; his coming under the notice of anthropologist Jeremy Beckett; his successful appearance in Wilcannia on a country music show; his travelling years; alcohol and mental health issues; cutting a record in Sydney; his death in 1991; Dougie Young's songs: drinking and its associated illegality; his sources and influences, which he later parodied; his musical style, instrument, playing venues, etc.; the lyrics of Dougie's songs, a window into how local Aboriginal people lived their lives within a web of legal and cultural restrictions; Aboriginal country music singers at the time; Dougie's particular gift for creating a sense of place and time; Babs Vincent songs sung by Dougie Young; "Dungenyal" (or methylated spirits) songs as a category; performing the works at tonight's concert, in contrast to the performance at the Folk Festival as a country rock band, with drums, bass, steel and electric guitars; meeting with Dougie Young's grandson, Jimmy James (stage name); the two musicians give a brief introduction to each song and play the concert's signature piece. Thankyous and acknowledgements. Questions and answers.
