Mexican university students enrolled in a general English course were administered a battery of tests including a reading comprehension test based on a Spanish text, one based on an English text, and the TEAL test battery of English language proficiency for adult students. Half the students were given an easy English text and a difficult Spanish text; the other half were given a difficult Spanish text and an easy English text. A positive but low correlation was found between the subjects' performance on the reading comprehension test in the native language and the test in the second language. The strongest relationship encountered was between English language proficiency as measured by TEAL and reading comprehension in English. The easy text correlated at a lower level with TEAL than the difficult text. The two texts appeared to be different from each other when readers were reading in their mother tongue, but the differences seemed to disappear when they read in a foreign language. This suggests that the problems of reading in a foreign language are greater than any inherent conceptual or linguistic difficulties that might exist in one text and not the other. The tests are appended. (JB)
