Based on enrollment and cost data supplied by each of the 51 Illinois public community colleges under a uniform accounting system, this report graphically and textually analyzes instructional costs per student credit hour generated during fiscal year (FY) 1979. The analysis, which compares cost areas by state, district, and institutional averages, includes an examination of: (1) full, net, and total instructional unit costs; (2) net instructional costs for salaries, departments, maintenance, and rentals; (3) unit costs by cost area categories, such as department head compensation, clerical salaries, and contractual services; (4) unit costs for educational support services; (5) unit costs per instructional program; and (6) unit costs for individual subject areas within academic programs. Major findings reveal that the average net instructional cost per student semester hour rose from $52.83 in FY 1977 to $57.31 in FY 1978. Instructional salaries made up the largest segment ($25.28) of the 1978 cost figure, followed by educational support services ($18.29), operations and maintenance ($7.96), equipment costs ($0.61), and building rental costs ($0.46). Programs in health technology, natural science, industrial technology, and general academic areas generated the largest curricular unit costs. The report appendix includes a classified outline of instructional programs and provides the materials used in the cost study. (JP)
