This sourcebook, intended for museum professionals, is an introduction to issues of lifelong learning, adult education, continuing education, and community education. It also provides a brief historical review and examples of museum programs for adults. These programs and services include bulletins and journals, slide-tape and video presentations, studios and laboratories, classes, clubs, volunteer programs, outreach programs, and teacher services. The major portion of the document outlines characteristics of adults which influence their learning. Included in this section are a summary of stages of adulthood and roles that adults play, implications for teaching based on theories of adulthood, a summary of surveys of adult learners in part-time educational programs, and a survey of adults in science centers. Places and sponsors of lifelong learning are described: public school adult education, private industry, city recreation departments, and community organization. Also, implications of the lifelong learning movement for museums are outlined. Because museums will be understood as valuable learning sources, they must vary their programs, be aware of the number of learning environments that adults have, decide how museum resources can be directed toward adults, and consider their role in helping the functionally illiterate. Other sections of the document present the HEW report to Congress on lifelong learning policies, legislative precedents, a resource list, and a selected bibliography. (KC)
