- Summary:

The impact of students' prior interest in course subject matter on their evaluations of instructional effectiveness was determined. Students' evaluations of instructional effectiveness were collected in two different university settings involving 1,102 classes, while instructor self evaluations were also collected in one of these settings involving 329 classes. In both university settings, students' prior subject interest was correlated with student ratings of teaching effectiveness, particularly ratings of learning/value and overall course rating. Using data from one of these settings, the combined impact of a wide variety of student, course, and instructor characteristics (expected grade, class size, years in school, teacher rank, etc.) was determined; students' prior subject interest was found to be the most important in predicting their evaluations. In addition, instructors' self evaluations were positively correlated with both their own and their students' perceptions of prior subject interest. Furthermore, the instructors' ratings of learning/value and the overall course were similar to those found with student ratings of teaching effectiveness. (Author/RL)
