The 27 teaching ideas and activities presented in this booklet were developed by Pennsylvania teachers to address four critical experiences in reading and communication arts; responding to literature; sustained silent reading of self-selected books; composing, both orally and in writing; and investigating and mastering language patterns. The entry for each activity includes the following information: (1) the activity's name, (2) the critical experience it addresses, (3) expected student outcomes, (4) number of students who can participate, (5) intended grade level, (6) materials needed, (7) amount of instructional time needed by the teacher, (8) amount of student independent activity time needed, (9) a description of the activity, and (10) additional suggestions for the activity's implementation.
