- Summary:
-
As opposed to being a "closed" text (tightly constrained by physical formats, corporate style, and specialized vocabulary), technical writing is actually "open" in the sense that such a text can be interpreted subjectively by an informed audience. Three ethical issues that should be explored in teaching technical writing include personality--the presence of the author and a discernible "voice"; objectivity--the fair treatment of facts and phenomenon; and linguistic manipulation--using language as a tool to create illusion. Based on knowledge of these areas it will be possible to offer writing instruction that gives the technologically minded student a valuable asset--communication skills--as well as a sense of values.
