- Summary:
-
A career exploration program provided a group of twenty-five academically and/or socioeconomically handicapped New Haven, Connecticut, high school students with career guidance, classroom instruction, and exploratory work experience in area businesses and agencies. In their junior year participants were placed in an eight-week careers course covering career clusters, skills and abilities required by various occupations, legal rights related to racial and sexual job discrimination, and decision making skills. They were then placed in two learning sites in addition to their regular academic courses and spent eight weeks in six to eight occupations. Students then worked with guidance counselors and career education staff to assess their experiences and plan relevant academic programs. During their senior year students focused on two occupations and began to apply to postsecondary training programs. The first year of the program was very successful --twenty students successfully completed the program and five businesses more than the fifteen targeted contributed time and staff to the program. Recommendations included devoting more attention to the relationship between students and job-site volunteers and developing a more sophisticated objective concerning sex stereotyping related to male students. Appendixes (half the document) present sample curriculum guides, post-placement interview forms, and student evaluation forms. (MN)
