Programs that illustrate the ways in which colleges and universities are helping students understand technological methods and issues are described. Some of the programs approach technological literacy from a humanities vantage point that integrates technology into the coursework, while others employ a strict technological approach that touches only peripherally on humanities. Additionally, an essay by Edward Friedman, "Dimensions of Technological Literacy in Liberal Education," suggests that educated persons must gain an understanding of engineering concepts and techniques if they are to actively participate in future decision-making. The following college programs are described: (1) Department of Technology and Society, State University of New York, College at Stony Brook; (2) Environmental Studies Department, University of Central Florida; (3) Science, Technology, and Society, Lehigh University; (4) Man, Technology, and Society, Saint Louis University; (5) Program in Science, Technology, and Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; (6) Science, Technology, and Society Program, Pennsylvania State University; (7) Sociotechnical Systems Design Program, University of Wisconsin, Madison; and (8) Patterns of Problem Solving, University of California, Los Angeles. Additional programs and resources are also described. (SW)
