This four-part learning module was designed to assist educators in evaluating their leadership style and professional interactions with others. After defining leadership, Part I discusses task analysis and illustrates its use in educational settings. Then, the module lists the personality traits identified in research as important to successful leadership and asks the learners to rank the importance of the traits and assess themselves in terms of each. Next, people-centered and task-centered leadership styles are depicted as two poles of a managerial grid, with each square on the grid representing a different management style. Part II focuses on power, identifying three determinants of power (i.e., resources, dependency, and alternatives) and five levels of power (i.e., reward, coercive, referent, expert, and legitimate). This section also considers the power inherent to certain positions within an organization. Part III presents a continuum of educational leadership styles, ranging from extremes of autocracy to abdication. This section helps the learners determine to what degree decision-making should be participatory, providing criteria for making this determination. Finally, Part IV looks at the characteristics and limitations of charismatic and intellectual leadership, and considers the value of directive and non-directive counseling in management. The module provides reinforcement exercises throughout and pre- and post-tests. (AYC)
