A pilot program was begun at the University of Southern Mississippi to measure the effect of a concentrated period of linguistic and communication skill development at the beginning of college for high risk students. The experiment was designed to follow an experimental group drawn carefully from the 15% of college freshmen with the lowest scores on the American College Test. The sample was carefully balanced to match both a typical statewide population and a control group that did not receive the treatment. While the complete data will not be available until the graduation of the students, after one year all the experimental students were still in school and showed improvement in grades, as well as in their writing, speaking, and reading abilities. They also experienced great growth in personal confidence and grade expectation. As a result of the pilot program's success, two more years of larger experimental samples were funded. As the work proceeds, it becomes clear that strong training in speech communication skills, especially when organized into the first year of college, greatly improves the academic prospects of the high risk student.
