A seminar was convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the purpose of discussing the organization, management, and improvement of teacher training centers for the health professions. The following recommendations were made: (1) WHO should facilitate the exchange of information on development programs and medical teaching practice by means of seminars, conferences and workshops, publications, fellowships, and exchange of staff; (2) Evaluation of innovations in medical education with the aim of identifying factors likely to contribute to success or failure and transferability to other institutions should be promoted; (3) WHO should coordinate a study of methods and approaches to staff development programs for medical teachers; (4) WHO should promote medical teaching among national bodies, institutions, medical schools, and individual teachers; and (5) All members of health care teams who contribute to medical teaching should be recognized and supported. Papers from Denmark, the United Kingdom, West Germany, Switzerland, France, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on planning and implementing staff development programs are included. (JD)
