Current literature on teacher participation in school decision making was investigated. While research findings were found to be at times contradictory, some general conclusions about teacher participation are drawn. Teachers are not homogeneous in their preferences for participation in school decision making. Many teachers feel decisionally deprived; relatively few feel decisionally saturated. The relationship between decisional discrepancy state and satisfaction appears to be curvilinear with equilibrium as the most desirable state. The type of decision to be made is an important factor in determining whether teachers want to become involved in the decision making process and whether they will derive satisfaction from the experience. Teachers tend to desire involvement in the decisions that are most relevant to them as teachers. The amount of time and work that will be required of them are major concerns of teachers when they consider whether or not to become involved in school decision making. The leadership of the principal in shared decision making seems to be important for the success of such involvement. (JD)
